Quick tip: Avoid cardboard for long term storage
Cardboard breaks down over time and the deterioration causes dust. Dust not only causes a mess that will mess with your allergies, it can also damage certain items, especially clothing or linens because dust wears down the threads.
Also, rats and mice can easily chew through boxes to find food and build nests. This is not an issue during a move or when storing for only a few weeks. However, if storing for several months, you do not want to provide pests with convenient nests.
Avoid these problems by using plastic bins with lids.
