About the Coffee Memorial Blood Center
Originally, founded in 1949 under the name Potter County Memorial Blood Center, they collected their first blood donation in 1950. However, by the 1960s the center was also providing services to Randall county. Consequently, they decided a name change was necessary.
It was re-named in honor of Amarillo native James Robert Coffee, M.D. He was a promising young physician who had dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon. However, ulcertive colitis cut his dream short. Sadly, he died of this ailment just short of his 22nd birthday.
Today, the Coffee Memorial Blood Center produces more than 60,000 components annually, insuring availability to area patients under all circumstances. Moreover, Coffee Memorial is the exclusive provider of blood products and services to the entire High Plains Region made up of 31 counties and 29 medical facilities in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles.
