The first on our list of storage mistakes may seem ridiculous, after all newspaper has long been the go to wrapping material to protect items in transit, however, the newspaper ink can bleed and transfer to items. Upakt points out that this is especially true if you are not using a climate-controlled unit. Once the ink gets on your stuff, it is often impossible to get it off again.
2. Not labelling
Like we said before, packing for storage is normally a hurried activity, but taking a few moments to label boxes, bins, bags, …etc. will save you a lot of time and energy in the future when you are trying to find that one box of Christmas decorations buried in the back of your storage unit.
3. Packing carelessly
This is one of the hardest storage mistakes to avoid. When in a rush, it is tempting to just stuff things wherever they will fit, but take a deep breath and think about what you are packing. For instance, you should pack books flat on their sides in order to prevent their spines from warping and tearing. Clothing, bedding, etc… should be packed in plastic bins to prevent moisture build up and protect from dust. You should not pack heavy items like books all together. You should spread them out among boxes with lighter items. For more tips read our blog Packing for Storage.
4. Getting the wrong unit size
One of the biggest storage mistakes you can make when renting a storage unit is getting the wrong size. If your unit is too small, you will have figure out either getting a second unit or a bigger unit, either way it is going to throw a pretty brutal wrench into your day. If you get a unit that is too big, you are paying extra every month for space you are not using. You can avoid these headaches with a little research. Most storage companies with have a unit guide on their websites, so take the time to pick the right one.
5. Getting the wrong type of unit
Size is not the only consideration when picking a unit. Choosing the wrong unit types means you are either damaging your items or paying extra every month for amenities you don’t need. If you are storing items that are sensitive to extreme heat or cold such as electronics, art, instruments, etc… you should strongly consider getting a climate-controlled unit. In the same way, if you are storing cushioned furniture or clothing just packed in boxes, consider the dust control option. However, if you are just storing solid furniture and items packed in closed plastic bins just a regular outside unit is most likely just fine for your needs. In this case, a little research can save you from huge storage mistakes.
6. Not insuring items
While every storage facility should have security precautions, in the event of burglary, fire, or damaging storms your items could be gone forever or hopelessly damaged. Taking the time to insure your items will allow you to recover the monetary value of the items lost. Though Sparky’s does NOT require tenants to insure their items, you ought to consider it if you are storing valuable items, especially if it is for an extended period.
Storage facilities regularly offer limited time specials to help fill their inventory. These special offers are for customers who are shopping around for the best deal. But don’t just stop at the price you see advertised. Ask about the facility’s policy for price increases and how often they typically increase prices. Ask about their security procedures. How often do employees walk through the facilities? Does CCTV monitor the entire property? If you find a storage facility that meets all your needs but is not advertising a promotion, ask them about their current specials when you call or go in. Most likely they do have a promotion going on.
